Just the exe's

The programs themselves are only 56kB and 52kB respectively, but in case you don't have Visual Basic or are missing the dlls, they won't run. I've uploaded the setups here which increase the size of download but guarantee that you won't have problems with the programs. In case you want just the exe's then you can get them from:

I save a lot of my messages from my Nokia 3120 using a DKU-5 cable (Yeah, I sound so technocool! But its just a simple cable :D)

Where was I? Yes. I save a lot of my messages, and the phone browser doesn't give the files unique filenames. So I used to have to put them in to seperate folders to avoid overwriting.

Well, around the same time that I got my DKU-5 cable, we started with VB6. And I liked fiddling around with it, coz its so easy (hence the name, nogoodatcoding, since I can't do nothing with nothing else!) So I decided to make a program to read my message file, extract the timestamp and rename the file using the date and time of the message. That way I could easily sort them out and keep track of it all.

I've finished with the program and fixed most (!) of the bugs (Its a small program, I hear you say! What bugs could it have?? Hey, read my id! Again! Again! Till you get it through your head! NO.GOOD.AT.CODING! Do I have to spell it out? Oh. Wait. I just did :D)

Right. To cut it short. Here's the program with help file that'll rename your Nokia message files (.vmg) using a yyyy-mm-dd @ HH-MM-ss format.

  • SMS Saver

After sometime of using my Renamer, something got screwed up with my OS and the Nokia Phone Browser wouldn't delete any messages off the phone. Since I didn't exactly have the time to reinstall everything then, I decided instead to make a program where you type in the message and other details and it would save it in the .vmg format (to keep it consistent with the rest of my saved sms'). (No time to reinstall an OS (a couple of hours) but enough time to make a program (quite a lot of hours more!), I hear you say. Where's the logic in that? Well, I was already making this for someone else and I just adapted it to my needs, so there!)

Well, anyway, you type in stuff and set the date and time and the number you got it from and you can save the message in a .txt file or .vmg file, as you like. The name, by default, would be in the same yyyy-mm-dd @ HH-MM-ss that my Renamer uses, but you can change it, individually, for each file.
